Dear all,
A self-reflection for anyone fascinated by science. Is time travel possible?
Before answering the question let us begin with time. What is the defenition of time? Time is probably best thought of as a dimension. Objects have length, breadth, depth, and duration. Even in day-to-day life, people intuitively understand this. When you want to meet someone, you tell them where (locating a spot in three physical dimensions) and when (locating a spot in a time dimension). To specify an event, we need all four dimensions.

This leads to the common statement, usually unexamined, that "time is the fourth dimension".

Albert Einstein's theory of relativity suggests that time slows down the nearer to the speed of light an object goes - therefore if an object was traveling at the speed of light itself ( 300,000,000 m/s ) then time would stop completely. From there, exceeding this speed would cause the whole process to go backwards, and in theory at least, you would actually be traveling backwards in time. Unfortunately it is thought impossible to reach the speed of light, generally due to the "infinite mass" brought on as a result of speeds comparable to that of light.
But perhaps one day science will surprise us all.

Regards

yes, and the example about the cat inside the box is really good. The cat is dead and alive at the same time!

But as Einstein said: "God does not play dice"
BuMahdi
I would say Yes, it is possible, because of wormholes and black holes and because Imam Mahdi (AS) can stay in occultation, of course Allah knows best and I don't think human beings are ready to understand this just yet, maybe sometime in the future. (or the past?! confusing ya? lol )

Stephen Hawkings wrote alot about the subject.

Time travel movies are my favourite...

brother bumehdi if u like time travel movies you should go see the butterfly effect.....its not really scientific but i think its really cool and recomend it to u all.. biggrin.gif cool.gif wink.gif
BuMahdi
is it called that because of the theory if a butterfly flapped it's wings on one side of the world it has caused a typhoon somehwere else?

Thanks for the tip sister zainab I will try and see if I can get it on DVD.

I'll also try to get this title. Well, some people are trying suspended animation to travel to the future (that is to freeze yourself after death and get reanimated in a future timepoint where they can give dead people their lives back). I think when you have to go, you have to go.
For those who are planning to live forever:

كل نفس ذائقة الموت وانما توفون اجوركم يوم القيامة فمن زحزح عن النار وادخل الجنة فقد فاز وما الحياة الدنيا الا متاع الغرور

سورة آل عمران - سورة 3 - آية 185

"Fascinating is a word I use for the unexpected"
BuMahdi
That is so true biggrin.gif

yuk i wouldnt like to be around for ever...how boring...this freezing thing reminds me of Demolition Man...by the way a new movie called "I, Robot" is coming out soon, I've seen previews and it looks really good, it's based on a few famous short stories...although it can't be THAT famous since i have forgotten the authors name confused.gif

ah well...

Brother Ahmed do you ever watch Stargate SG-1 on TV? I love it, they use a lot of the scientific and medical and archaeological theories in the series.

I have all of them on dvd, oh my God, im a science-fiction geek! pinch.gif

Salaam BuMahdi,
Well, I'm a Trekky (a word used for Star Trek fans smile.gif ). The reason why I like it is because it's themes aren't allways non-realistic. My favorite characters are Mr. Spock and Data (imagine what would be of Captain James and Pickard without them). Why especially Spock and Data? Well, maybe because they use common reasoning and logic.

And one of the most fascinating scentence of Mr. Spock: "Fascinating is a word I use for the unexpected"
BuMahdi
No i'm not a trekky as such but I used to watch the Next generation on a regular basis, I like Data aswell...the best thing in start trek for me? -THE HOLODECK! biggrin.gif

But no I'm a Stargate fan...

i am very new to this site. just happened to come across it by chance. being an avid science fan, i thought i'd post to this somewhat old and forgotten topic.

as i understand it, the quran does speak of 'time travel'. i remember learning about the prophet's (pbuh) ascension to the skies, and his return, within one night. this, i believe, is one of the many instances that islam presents the concept of time travel.

BuMahdi
Salam, welcome to the board.

Do you think you can dig the verses up brother?

Another instance I would say has been mentioned in the Koran was when King Solomon orders the Queen of Sheba's throne brought to him before she arrived. If I'm not mistaken it was brought to him in a blink of an eye.

actually Muhammad as. returned before his bed got cold!
and it is not called time ravel, science calles it,"dematerialization-materialization"
it is a proven fact!
they have done it with an electron, from one side of a table to the other.
this method was also used with the throne of Bilquies by the unseen entity(jinn) in the court of Solayman as.
